What symbols are most important in your life?
The symbols that speak to me the most are lotus blossoms. The reasoning is a bit murky, so let me try to unwind it. I love all things aquatic. I love that feeling of being near to a body of water. To me there is an electric charge that runs through me when I get close to water. It's a primal and urgent current. Perhaps I was a mermaid long ago and I've forgotten that form. Also, the lotus represents a form of purity. It grows out of mud and yet the blossom remains unstained. For me, the represents not letting the world grind me down, to rise above challenges put before me, etc.
I love OM symbols too, both the Devanagari version & the Tibetan version. During my past year of immersing myself in yoga teacher training, I had no idea the effect of sound of OM on and within my body. During one session, we chanted OM, and felt the effects in our femurs. It was mind blowing. OM actually sounds more like AUM, a three syllable word. Another amazing moment happened after we sat meditation, still with our eyes closed we chanted OM continuously (instead of the whole room chanting together in unison) for a few minutes, and all of us stopped at the same time. The instruction was to stop when it felt right. Without being able to see each other, we were able to feel the right moment arrive. It still gives me shivers to think about it.
If you could live anywhere else in the world, where would it be?
It would be near Vancouver, BC. It wouldn't be right in the city though, it's a bit too hectic. I feel like I can be the most me on the west coast. I visited friends a few years ago, and everything just clicked. The atmosphere, the environment, how free my spirit felt, and how I just felt like I was home. I found the place where I belong. The air, the wind, the mountains, the vibrancy of everything makes me feel much more alive.
What's your favorite recipe that calls for chocolate?
This is a trick question, because all recipes call for chocolate. All right, the serious answer is cookies. But the cookies must be soft & chewy. I do not truck with crunchy & hard cookies. Those are an abomination.
How did you choose your username?
It evolved over time. The original username was 'Nalathil' which was a name I came up with while in the throes of a fairly serious Lord of the Rings squee. I read The Hobbit in Grade 8, followed by the Lord of the Rings. I have always loved trees. As a child I was fascinated with them. In Tolkien's world, there are trees that are also more than trees called Ents. There is an Ent called 'Galathil' and that sounded pretty cool to my ear, but I wanted to be unique, hence, "Nalathil." It just looked right to me. I wove this story in my head that Nalathil was the distant & Northerly cousin to Galathil afflicted who had a strong wanderlust & got permanently separated from her tribe.
Nalathil originated back in the mists of time when Livejournal was invite code only, so I began blogging on different blogging site that was similar. I didn't know anyone on Livejournal, nor how to go about getting an invite code. But, then, dramallama reared its head in the LOTR fandom I was a part of & I had just gone through a miscarriage. I didn't help the drama any, & probably made it worse. I had joined Livejournal as "Nalathil" but there was one girl from the LOTR fandom that kept coming to my journal & leaving nasty comments. I just got tired of it, and deleted that account. I needed a new start, and that's how 'Nalathilion' came to be. For the record, I pronounce both variations here.
What is your favorite color combination?
I cheated and picked the three I wear the most.
Turquoise & Navy
Purple & Orange
Brown & Apple Green
